LIMA, OHIO — Months after the demolition of the former Macy’s building at the Lima Mall, the site is rapidly taking shape as construction of a new Target store enters a visible and significant phase. This week, large concrete wall panels were installed, signaling that the project has moved from site preparation to vertical construction.

Cranes, grading equipment, and steel frames are now present behind a perimeter fence, transforming what had been an empty lot into an active build zone. The pace of the work has surprised many residents who had followed the initial demolition earlier this year.

Background

In early 2025, Target Corporation finalized the purchase of the Lima Mall parcel where Macy’s once stood. The nine-acre site was acquired for approximately $4.5 million. The former Macy’s structure, which had remained vacant for years, was demolished to clear the way for the retail giant’s first location in Allen County.

The new building is planned to be around 128,000 square feet in size, based on Target’s corporate site plan. Once completed, it is expected to include a full general merchandise selection, groceries, and a CVS pharmacy.

Construction Progress

By late October, multiple concrete wall panels had been erected on-site. A large crane can be seen positioning these panels, with crews actively working around the clock. Site grading and groundwork also appear to be mostly complete, with utility preparations and drainage systems in place.

Photos taken this week show the skeletal beginnings of the building, surrounded by green erosion barriers and temporary chain-link fencing. Equipment, including a green telescopic lift and concrete materials, is spread across the lot, indicating that foundational work is progressing steadily.

Economic Impact

Once operational, the store is expected to create approximately 200 jobs in the Lima area. In addition to long-term employment, the project has brought short-term construction and contracting opportunities to the region.

Local officials have welcomed the development as a major investment in the west side retail corridor. With other anchor stores gone from the mall, Target’s arrival is seen as a potential turning point for commercial redevelopment in the area.

What’s Next

Although Target has not yet announced an official opening date, similar store projects typically require 12 to 18 months from structural construction to ribbon-cutting. If this timeline holds, Lima residents can expect the store to open in late 2026.

In the meantime, Lima Voices will continue monitoring the site and providing updates as construction progresses.
